Hey Men and Women of Action-
Yesterday, Mike Fleming of Deadline broke a story concerning the distribution deal for the new Mel Gibson actioner Get The Gringo!
While Mel has been laying low after some pretty big personal issues, this film brings him back on screen in a role that is tailor made for Gibson, a gritty-looking comedy-action-caper.
Also, longtime ActionFest friend J.J. Perry was involved in the stunts on Get The Gringo, so we hope the best for J.J. and crew with this film!
Over at Deadline you can see the trailer for the film and read all about the unique distribution deal it is getting. Says Fleming:
“Mel Gibson’s Icon Productions has made an innovative deal with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment for a domestic direct-to-consumer release of Get The Gringo, a south-of-the-border gritty action film that Gibson stars in and financed. The film has been set for an exclusive premiere window May 1 on DirecTV, which will charge $10.99 per home viewing. A wider release on Blu-ray, VOD, and digital download will follow later in the year.”
What do you all think? Is this a smart move for Gibson?

A return to action movies is a good move for Gibson. That’s where he really made his name back in the 80s, and I think the fan base is still there. As for going the direct-to-DirecTV route, it’s tough to tell at this point. The paradigm for entertainment delivery is changing drastically. This may be the start of a new trend. On the other hand, it may fall flat. I’m anxious to see how it works out.
This is definitely one where we’ll have to kind of wait and see how successful it is. But one article I read suggested this was a very intentional gamble on Mel’s part and that he is a pretty shrewd business man. Again, only time will tell. Looks like a really fun movie though!
