THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS

Freshly dropped today, we have The RZA’s The Man With The Iron Fists featuring an all star cast that includes ActionFest Award Winner Cung Le! This thing looks crazy fun.

LOOPER

Also dropping today is the sci-fi actioner Looper from Rian Johnson (Brick). This trailer is apparently a little spoilery, so watch at your own risk. I couldn’t resist and the trailer honestly gave me goose bumps. Joseph Gordon Levitt is one of the most promising actors of this generation and pitting him against Bruce Willis is just casting perfection!

TOTAL RECALL

Is it just me, or does this movie not involve Mars at all? From what I can tell this looks a WHOLE lot like Minority Report, features some of the hottest actresses on planet earth, and otherwise cribs the original film with none of the insane flairs of genius that made the original so fun! But I can’t deny that the trailer is slick, clean, and slightly sterile. What do you think?

ALEX CROSS

I’ve never read any of the Alex Cross novels, but I am pretty sure I saw both films that featured Morgan Freeman playing the character back in the 1990s and early 2000s. I believe those were Kiss The Girls and Along Came A Spider. This time out, Tyler Perry is playing the detective, but that isn’t why I’m sharing this trailer. Matthew Fox is playing the villain in this film and the web is all abuzz about his physical transformation. I will be seeing the film just to see Matthew Fox bring this crazy villain to life, but I wonder if anyone let Mr. Fox know that the rest of this movie doesn’t look anywhere near as crazy good as he does?

We all know the works of Quentin Tarantino. The man is a peace maker who brings together the worlds of the genre geek and the art film connoisseur. His new film just got a brand spanking new trailer and day-um.

My favorite moments would have to be:

- James Remar (The Warriors’ Ajax), saying “Last chance fancy pants”.

- The shot of the blood spraying on the cotton.

- Franco Nero passing the buck along to Jamie Foxx at the end there…

I don’t know how most of you felt about the first Expendables, but I had a blast with it. I still felt it was a little more restrained than I would have expected, however. There was a ton of testosterone, but slightly more posturing and banter, with maybe too few balls out action set pieces. But dang it, I still dug it. And this trailer would SURE have me believe that all of my issues with the first film have been, shall we say… dealt with.

At ActionFest 2012 we featured two of the films in the very first line up of After Dark Action films. Both Dragon Eyes and Transit picked up jury awards at the festival, and today, you can see all five of the After Dark Action films in theaters and on VOD!

El Gringo

At this point, all I need to know is that Scott Adkins is in a movie, and I’ll see it. Is he the greatest actor alive? Not by a long shot. But his physicality and fight work speak volumes and I’d love to see Adkins rise to the top tiers of action heroes!

Philly Kid

I’m not familiar with most of the names involved in this project, but I’m certainly familiar with the genre! Philly Kid looks to be a Rocky-style fight drama set in the world of MMA and, or course, involving some foul play on the part of some good fellas.

Stash House

Dolph Lundgren, ladies and gentlemen. Do I need to comment further? Although this film looks like another entry in the already crowded home invasion sub-genre, I’m always happy to see Dolph Lundgren play a villain!

Actionites Of The World!

This is the second video from ReelzChannel’s visit to ActionFest. Check out this highlight reel with a heavy focus on interview time with Best Young Stunt Man of the Year Award Winner Trevor Habberstad and his father Jeff Habberstad. The video features some interesting glimpses at both Habberstads’ bodies of work, including the upcoming Will Smith film After Earth and this Summer’s Battleship!

I was really excited to catch the video that ReelzChannel TV came up with upon their visit to ActionFest. Reelz’ Jeremy Parsons came down to Asheville to experience ActionFest and this video is the first report from their visit! Here you’ll see their introduction to the festival itself, along with interviews with Gina Carano, Tom Berenger, and other stars attending this year’s ActionFest!

I think it is fair to say that this summer has some AMAZING looking action titles in the line up. Sure, one has to approach super hero films with a more broad definition than merely “an action film”, but as you can see from our own line ups here at ActionFest, we think broadly when we think “action”.

I have no qualms about calling The Dark Knight Rises an action film. I also have no qualms suggesting that this is my personal most anticipated movie of the summer as well.

But enough of my yammering, you just want to see the new trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, and here she be:

What do you think? I think it is very foreboding and spare. Yet a cool thing about that tone is that the trailer does NOT give away all the major action set pieces, which I really like. I think Warner Brothers know they have a built in mega-hit on their hands, so they don’t need to spoil the whole story to get butts in seats.

At this point, The Dark Knight saga is at mythic proportions across just about all socio-economic group in our country. So yeah, they can probably afford to cut a trailer this ominous.

Ever since the Awards Ceremony at ActionFest 2012, there has been buzz about Tom Elliott’s award for Best Car Stunt of the Decade. And with good cause.

Tom is the President of Stunts Unlimited and he always brings an added flare to his work (the exploding water barrels came directly from Tom’s creative mind!) Check out the full stunt in question below from Season 4 of Criminal Minds, the episode is titled “Normal”.

2011 ActionFest Juror Katrina Hill reviews Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines on her website, Action Chick Flick:

“This documentary is an excellent depiction of the struggles of women throughout the years to overcome opposition while seeking equal opportunities. During that uncertain time women were looking for strong female role models in media but came up with very few. More heroines came along throughout the years, but then a new trend started of altering these women to be hypersexualized as well as killing them off.”

Hill is right in pointing out that heroines and superheroines are treated very differently from male ones and that we have a long way to go yet.  It’s a thoughtful piece, so make sure to check out the whole thing. And make sure to see the documentary. It’s fun, thought-provoking and it has excellent girls like Katie talking about what Wonder Woman (and other superheroes) mean to them:
